A Wonderful Place to Grow

Rosie the Manatee, Whittier's Adoptee

Our school has adopted Rosie, a wonderfully gentle manatee, who resides in Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, a wildlife preserve, in Florida. Rosie cannot be released into the wild because she has an equilibrium problem which causes her to swim in right-hand circles. A big girl, Rosie weighs in at 2500 pounds; she does love to eat, but never uses her size to "budge" the other manatees at the manatee salad bar in the park. Rosie is loved by the park staff for being gentle, kind and maternal, especially toward the younger manatees. Debbie Adams, one of our Title One teachers, has written a song about Rosie that we enjoy singing at our monthly assemblies.
