Longfellow School has an ongoing, positive discipline plan used by the entire school that is driven by data gathered from students, parents, and staff. It is based on the belief that children must be taught behavioral expectations and then be encouraged to practice those behaviors. Children at Longfellow will be introduced to the Skill of the Month. These skills help children develop positive social interactions with peers and adults. Children earn Longfellow CARES slips for demonstrating Cooperative, Accepting, Respectful, Encouraging, and Sharing behavior. Longfellow staff has worked together to develop behavioral expectations in the following areas of our schools:
The Habits of Mind are not instructional recipes. They involve building students' awareness in order to become self-directed learners. All teachers can seize the opportunity to engage, reinforce, illuminate, and practice the Habits of Mind.
Longfellow teachers integrate the Habits of Mind into daily instruction. We expect and trust that our students can and will:
manage their impulsivity
be persistent
strive for accuracy
be empathetic
think about their thinking (metacognition)
