ART

"If our children don't learn to shape images, images will shape them." - Bill Ivey, National Endowment for the Arts

Art is an integral component of every aspect of Longfellow School. It enhances the creative, emotional and intellectual growth of each child. The arts provide opportunities for problem solving, self expression, risk taking, and community involvement. The arts connect students to themselves and each other. The arts reach students who may not otherwise be reached and provide new challenges for those already considered successful. Cultural diversity is celebrated as children explore their world through a variety of mediums and experiences.

Longfellow's self supporting arts program includes the visual and performing arts, art residencies, drama, theater, dance, poetry, drumming, art shows and exhibits at school and in the community, a permanent collection of children's art, high quality art materials and equipment, and continuing staff education to support art experiences in the classroom. Fifth graders create a major building enhancement project that is a lasting legacy. Each spring Longfellow's ArtWorks Festival highlights the talents and triumphs of each child. This family oriented festival includes three auctions, dinner, children's activities, music, and dance.
