Bozeman Public Schools

WELCOME - A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

Welcome! Thank you for the interest you have shown in the Bozeman Public Schools and the time and effort you will give to our students. When you multiply the numbers of days substitutes provide service in our classrooms by the number of students in those classrooms it is easy to see the tremendous impact you have on our education program. You and your colleagues will literally spend thousands of hours working with our students. We want that time to be beneficial for the students and rewarding for you.

This web site has been developed to assist you in being familiar with the policies and procedures that will impact you as a substitute teacher. I ask that you become familiar with these items and ask questions when needed.

Our school year will be better for having your support and involvement. I wish you the best in the time you will invest with our students.

Kirk J. Miller, Ed.D.
Superintendent

GENERAL INFORMATION FROM HUMAN RESOURCES
Patrick Strauss
Director of Human Resources

Welcome to the Bozeman Public Schools! Our substitute teachers provide a very important service to the students of the Bozeman School District, and we are pleased to have you as members of our educational team. We know that you will make every effort to make a very real and significant contribution to our instructional program in carrying on the work of those teachers who find it necessary to be absent.

We want to explain some of our procedures and to answer many of the questions you may have. School secretaries have more detailed information regarding various duties and individual policies and procedures which you may request. Please introduce yourself to the secretary when you enter the school. Ask for any pertinent information and ask to be introduced to the teachers in the rooms on either side of you. If you need any additional assistance throughout the day, these teachers can help you or you may telephone the office.

You should receive a detailed lesson plan(s) as well as the class schedule and emergency procedures.

The duties of a substitute teacher are not easy, however we feel certain that you will find our staff very willing to give you the assistance and cooperation you need.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUBSTITUTE TEACHING

Preference will be given in most situations to those applicants who hold teaching certificates and to those who have completed teacher preparation courses. A bachelor's degree is highly preferred. Other preferred requirements include proven effectiveness in working with school-age children in an instructional setting and dependability. Long-term substitutes (those who substitute more than 35 consecutive days in the same position) must have a valid Montana teacher certificate.

State law requires the District to contract a certified teacher to replace a teacher who has been absent for 35 consecutive days. Certified substitutes who are selected to teach during such an absence will be contracted beginning the 36th day of the teacher's absence. The substitute must be currently certified in the area of the teaching assignment. The contract will be issued at the appropriate level of education and experience in accordance with district hiring procedures. The district will not pay such substitutes retroactively.

PROCEDURES FOR EMPLOYMENT

All applicants for substitute teaching must start an on-line application for employment at our web page, www.bsd7.org/humanresources. Applications will be screened and successful applicants will be called and scheduled to attend an orientation session. Additional requirements include a negative tuberculin test within the past 12 months and fingerprinting to complete a background check. Other required forms are completed at the time of the orientation.

SCHOOL DISTRICT AND COMMUNITY INFORMATION

Bozeman School District #7 serves the city of Bozeman and surrounding rural area. Bozeman has a population of approximately 39,500 persons and covers an area of 6.5 square miles. It is approximately the sixth largest city in the State in reference to population. A significant portion of the population is made up of students attending Montana State University.

All rural elementary school districts in Gallatin County are separate from Bozeman Public Schools and are supervised by the Office of the Gallatin County Superintendent of Schools located in the Courthouse. Those students belonging to the Bozeman Public Schools High School District enter ninth grade at the Bozeman High School from their respective rural school districts.

The Bozeman School District #7 has an enrollment of 5286 students and is based on a 6-3-4 plan which includes six years of elementary (kindergarten through grade 5), three years of middle school (grades 6 through 8), and four years of high school (grades 9 through 12). There are six elementary schools, two middle schools, a senior high school and an alternative high school program within the district.

The Board of Trustees is composed of eight members elected by the voters of Bozeman and the rural Gallatin County. Regular meetings are held on the second Monday of each month in the Board Room in the Willson School. Routine special meetings may be held on the fourth Monday of the month.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHER WORK DAY

A full day is normally defined as working from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding lunch. A half-day is defined as 3 3/4 hours. Arriving approximately 1/2 hour before students at the beginning of the instructional day will allow substitute teachers to familiarize themselves with lesson plans and other duties, assignment, and events for the day. It is expected that substitutes will complete notes for the returning teacher, straighten the room, and attend to any problems or concerns which may have arisen through the day before leaving. Substitutes who have only 1-2 periods to teach in a half-day assignment are expected to work 3 3/4 hours and to ask the principal or school secretary for tasks that will benefit the school, such as assisting in the library, supervising hallways, cafeterias or playground areas.

Individuals unable to fulfill the full day will not be paid for a full day. If you must leave prior to 4:00 p.m. or are called out after the start of the school day, you will be paid at the hourly rate of $11.73.

Please check in with the building secretary before leaving that building during any time of the day. Your services may be needed in another classroom for that period of time.

COMPENSATION FOR SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS

Substitute teacher compensation is $88.00 for a full day consisting of 7 1/2 hours or $11.73/hour. Substitutes will receive a minimum of 1/2 day call-out pay, which is $44.00 for 3 3/4 hours. Hours worked over 3 3/4, but less than 7 1/2 hours, will be paid at the rate of $11.73/hour. For those individuals who serve as substitute aides, the salary will be $9.10/hour, and $10.50/hour for clerical.

Payment is based upon signed authorization forms maintained at each school site. Actual number of hours must be entered on the time sheet for approval. The substitute teacher and the school principal must sign time sheets. Payment is on the 14th day of the month following the submission of the time sheet. Substitute teachers must verify time worked at the end of each day with the school secretary.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHER AND STUDENT USE OF THE INTERNET

Substitute teachers are not authorized to use the Internet in our schools. Substitutes should not be given lesson plans that include the use of computer labs or use of the Internet in the classroom. Alternative lesson plans should be provided. Substitutes are not authorized to use the Internet for personal reasons and they are not issued email accounts unless they are on an assignment for which they are issued a contract.
