Montana Common Core State Standards

It is with great enthusiasm and anticipation that we will begin implementing a new set of standards, the Montana Common Core State Standards (CCSS), in 2012! These standards were developed from the Common Core State Standards, an initiative of the National Governors’ Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. Their leadership helped to define the knowledge and skills students should attain during their K-12 education in the 21st century. Ultimately, the purpose for implementing the CCSS is so that all students graduate high school with skills prepared to succeed in college and the workplace.

These standards inform schools regarding "what" to teach. The "art" of teaching remains in the hands of our talented staff. Teachers will emphasize reading more informational and complex texts. In addition, students will practice writing to justify thinking as well as reasoning and writing for more authentic purposes. In general, students will participate in more problem solving and problem-based learning. We anticipate that the implementation of the CCSS will allow our students to experience more "real world," relevant connections. Your child’s classroom will be an even more engaging setting as students are provided with increased opportunities for collaboration, conversation, critical thinking and problem solving.

We have been working closely with school leaders and staff to prepare for the changes ahead as well as developing resources that will be of support to families. A brief introduction to Common Core Standards for each grade level follows below. You will also find grade level guides and links to state and national organizations to help you understand these important changes to curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
