PAC NEWS

Kudos!
A BIG thank you to PAC Volunteer, Jamie Reardon, for spending numerous hours placing student photos in the cum files in the CJ office. We appreciate all your help. PAC The Parent Advisory Council (PAC)is an organization for all parents/guardians of CJMS students. PAC’s goals are to help provide a sense of belonging at CJMS for students and parents through activities, assisting with enrichment programs and helping to provide scholarships. Meetings are the 1st Thursday of every month. Please remember that attendance at the meetings is not a requirement to be an active CJ parent! Feel free to contact Mary McMakin (587-1708) or Mary Nania (586-3160) with any questions regarding PAC volunteering possibilities. Parents please note January PAC meeting date change to Thursday, January 10th at 8:30 a.m. in the cafeteria. This meeting will be a kick-off for our annual fundraiser (see Family Spirit Night below). Please plan on attending this meeting, as the funds raised from this event are the majority of PAC’s budget. Please Plan a Family Pizza Night in honor of CJ! We now have a date for our MacKenzie River Pizza night! On Tuesday, February 12th any CJ teachers, staff, students, families or friends can go to the downtown MacKenzie River Pizza Company and eat in, take out or have dinner delivered – and MacKenzie River will put 20% of their bill towards CJ’s Parent Advisory Group. Please note that this means dinner will be full price for you – but the 20% for CJ’s PAC will be a very simple way for all of us to help CJ (think new school!) obtain items that it needs for classrooms, etc. As we near the date, we will be passing out coupons – which have to be presented at the time of purchase. Many, many thanks to MacKenzie River Pizza Company for giving us this opportunity!!! Family Spirit Night will be Friday, February 22nd. Please plan on attending this event for your entire family. It is a fun evening of carnival activities, games, food and a silent auction. The money raised from this event goes to the CJMS teacher or team sponsoring an event, booth, or silent auction item. PAC matches the money raised by each team or teacher; up to $200. This is a great way for the staff to supplement their class budgets. Please help PAC out by planning to attend with your entire family. If you would like to donate an item or service for the silent auction and/or kids raffle, or would like to be on the committee responsible for the auction, please contact Mary Nania at 586-3160. All donations are greatly appreciated!! We are also looking for a chairperson to coordinate the raffle of a framed Russell Chatham print that has been donated to our PAC. This raffle could be a terrific way to raise money for PAC! Contact Mary McMakin mrm@littleappletech.com or Mary Nania marynania@msn.com for more information. It’s NEVER too late to Invest in Your Child! Instead of selling items door to door to raise money, the CJMS PAC has chosen this easy and effective way to purchase items needed by teachers that aren’t covered by the district’s budget. Any amount of donation that fits within your budget is helpful and appreciated! Your donations to this campaign are tax deductible. Should you need another Invest in your child form, you tear off the form in this newsletter – or check with the CJ office. Square One Art orders Square One Arts orders have been delivered to your children. Many thanks to the teachers who made the projects happen and the parents who purchased the art! Advertising We have two businesses that are interested in sponsoring the CJMS Newsletter for one month, but we continue to look for others. The cost to you would be $250.00 and you would receive advertising in this newsletter. Please contact Amy Yovich at 920-1051. Spirit Wear! Forms are available in the office in the hand out display. We are still offering a limited number of in-stock gray hooded sweatshirts at the sale price of $10. The sale price is limited to stock on hand and will be handled first come, first served. Please contact Mary Nania at marynania@msn.com if you have any questions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Invest in your child (See PAC News above)

Math News You Can Use
|
“MATH NEWS YOU CAN USE” WHAT ARE CJMS STUDENTS LEARNING IN MATH CLASS? 6TH GRADE – BITS & PIECES 6th graders are currently studying “Bits & Pieces I’, a CMP unit focused on developing a deep understanding of rational numbers. Students will learn the meaning of fractions, decimals and percents and will become comfortable moving among these three representations of rational numbers. 6th graders will work on problems that reflect different contexts that involve writing, comparing and ordering fractions and decimals. This unit makes use of models such as fraction strips, number lines and grids. Skill with estimating and comparing is developed through a set of benchmark fractions and their decimal equivalents. As a side note: fractions are confusing to many adults, perhaps because the procedures for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing them seem arbitrary and unpredictable. For example, it is likely that few people really understand the “invert and multiply” rule for division by a fraction. It may be that these mysterious fraction manipulations, often taught without real-life problems or concrete embodiments to give them meaning, are what have convinced so many adults that mathematics is impossible to understand and that getting “correct” results is more a matter of good luck than good comprehension. CMP seeks to teach these concepts with real life application in ways that make sense to students, rather than presenting a rule to memorize, not understand, and quickly forget. 7th GRADE – STRETCHING & SHRINKING How do law enforcement officials know the height of a robber without measuring him? 7th graders studying “Stretching & Shrinking” will know! This unit focuses on geometry to develop an understanding of similar figures. Students will use properties of similar figures to explore reductions and enlargements such as those made on copy machines. Similarity will also be used to estimate the height of real objects (such as buildings, flagpoles and bank robbers) and the distance across large areas (such as ponds). By the end of the unit, students will be able to create similar figures, determine whether two figures are similar, and predict the relationship between lengths and areas for two similar figures. 8th GRADE – GROWING, GROWING, GROWING 8th graders are focusing on exponential relationships, in which a quantity grows larger or smaller at an increasing rate rather than a constant rate. For example, If your child asks you for an allowance of $1 the first week, $2, the second, $4 the third, $8 the fourth, etc, how much money will you owe them after two months, three months, a year? Watch your wallet! Exponential growth involves patterns that are based on multiplication rather than addition. Students will explore tables, graphs and equations to represent these situations. ALL STUDENTS All of these math units require students to know their multiplication facts FLUENTLY! If your child does not, he or she should practice! The best flash card method is using triangles with the factors in two corners and the product in the third, so your child’s brain sees the “fact family” all together. For example 7 X 8 = 56. The answer should NOT be hidden on the back! A good stocking stuffer would be “three corner flash cards” made by TREND Enterprises. Google it!
