Hawthorne Winter Carnival

This year’s Winter Carnival is on Friday, February 10th, from 5:30-7:00 PM.  All students and families are welcome.  There will be games, food and fun for all!  More information can be found in the PAC Corner.

Healthy Habits Challenge

The Healthy Habits Challenge is back!  Forms will be coming home for the Healthy Habits Challenge.  There is a different challenge each week, and the bottom of the form is each week's challenge.  A parent signature is needed on each week's slip once the student completes that challenge. Weekly slips are due by each TUESDAY morning when names will be drawn for that week’s winner.

Bozeman Schools Foundation Spelling Bee

This spring the Bozeman Schools Foundation announces the 5th annual Adult Team Spelling Bee Fundraiser. Businesses, schools, friends, and organizations can create or sponsor a team of three spellers. Competition will be intense for not only the cash prize but also the coveted bee trophy and best costume and team spirit awards. The Spelling Bee will take place on March 3rd, from 6:30 -10:30 PM at The Ellen Theater.  Distinguished Judges, Musical numbers from the Equinox Theater, and Pronouncer, “Chrysti the WordSmith”, prizes from local businesses, and a diabolical selection of words will all contribute to the festivities.
The entry fee per team is $300. Come cheer on your friends for $20 at the door. For more information visit:  www.BozemanSchoolsFoundation.org

Love & Logic Tip from our Parent Liason

You can teach your child to discuss school with you. While you are doing this, you can also lay the foundation blocks that will build a true winner out of your youngster. STEP ONE: Sit down with your children two to three times per week. Have them point out the best things they did on their papers. STEP TWO: Make sure your child describes to you the reasons for his or her success. As they put these into words, the reasons for the success will be imprinted on their brain, never to be erased. They will start to believe they are in control of their success. STEP THREE: Work with your children on their mistakes only when they ask for your help. Let the school work on deficiencies. Teachers have training to help with the deficiencies in effective ways. STEP FOUR: Be patient. This is a real change in operation. It will take the child a period of time to believe that this is not just a new phase his parents are going through. Look for the real benefits to show with time.

Online Survey

Bozeman School District #7 is launching on-line surveys to solicit feedback from students, parents, staff, and community members about safety, climate, communication, the academic program, and overall satisfaction.  The surveys may be accessed from the District homepage (www.bsd7.org) beginning Friday, February 10th, and responses will be collected through Friday, March 2nd.  The survey has approximately 7 questions and will only take about 5 minutes to complete.

Survey responses will be compiled and will be included in the District’s updated Balanced Scorecard, which will be available on the District’s webpage beginning in April, 2012.  The Balanced Scorecard provides a matrix of performance measures that address the four goal areas of the District’s Long Range Strategic Plan.  The current 2011 scorecard may be accessed on the District homepage.

PAC Corner

January has been a relatively peaceful month for us here at the PAC. I wish I could say I was skipping my duties for the endless powder turns January can often bring, but at this point I think I’d rather have one of those sail boats with ice skates on it, or a season pass to the bowling alley. We are looking forward to our annual Winter Carnival on Friday, February 10th, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM. Carnival is a great way to spend time with parents and kids in a completely informal and fun environment. We’ll have games, pizza, and other activities for all. We will also be auctioning gift baskets put together by each class. If you want to help with the basket project for your child’s classroom, contact your classroom PAC representative.

Our next PAC meeting is Thursday, February 9th, at 3:00 PM in the library. HAWKS, is complimentary, so please plan to stop by. Lastly, we do our best to reach out to parents and friends in a variety of ways…this monthly newsletter, daily e-mails, PAC bulletin board, announcements, monthly meetings, etc. If you have feedback on how we can improve our lines of communication, we welcome your comments. Your participation in our PAC and the school makes this a better place for all of us. Thanks and see you all bowling (or skiing).

INTENT TO RETURN FORMS

On Monday, February 6, 2012 your child will be coming home with an Intent to Return form, which must be returned to the school by Monday, February 13, 2012.  In order to reserve a space for your child and prepare class lists for next year, we need to determine which students will be returning in the fall of 2012, which students will have incoming kindergarten siblings, and students wishing to transfer to another school.

If you request a transfer to your attendance area school and we are unable to transfer your child, your child will remain on that waiting list until that can occur or until you notify the enrollment office that your are happy with your current placement.

If you request a transfer to a non-attendance area school and we are unable to transfer your child, your child will remain on that waiting list until a certain date.

If your child is placed in a non-attendance area school and there is not space for attendance area students, your child may be force transferred.

Please return the Intent to Return form to you child’s teacher by Monday, February 13, 2012.

New Student/Kindergarten Registration 2012-2013

Kindergarten and new students grades 1st-5th registration will be from Monday, March 5th, through Friday, April 6th. Enrollment packets will be available at the Enrollment Office from March 5th through April 6th. Starting on March 5th, the enrollment forms for next year will also be available on our Bozeman School District website.  www.bsd7.org

All students NEW to the Bozeman School District, including all KINDERGARTEN students must complete and return a registration form along with current immunization records and birth certificate to the Enrollment Office at 404 West Main during the registration period.

Parents that have checked that they have a Kindergarten sibling for next year on the Intent to Return form must still go to the Enrollment Office and register for kindergarten.

Attention 5th Grade Parents - 6th Grade Registration Night!

Please mark your calendars for this very important event!

CJMS 6th Grade Registration/Meeting Night will be on Thursday, February 9, 2012, from 5:30-6:30 PM in the CJMS gym.  Students are encouraged to attend.

SMS 6th Grade Registration Night will be on Thursday, February 9, 2012, from 6:00-7:00 PM in the 6th grade house.  This night is for parents/guardians only (due to space).

The middle schools will be sending home flyers to all 5th grade parents/guardians about this Registration Meeting Night.  Please plan to attend this very important evening to pick up your student’s 6th grade enrollment packet.

HAWKS Activity Updates and Early Release 2/15/12 Information

HAWKS will have a gymnastics & swimming activity on Wednesday, February 15th, the Early Release afternoon.  Sign-ups are required and the cost will be $10 in addition to the daily HAWKS care charges. Please check with Susie Miller to sign up. There is a limit of 50 students. Transportation will be by bus.

HAWKS made needle felt mice with LaVonne Stuckey in January. This artist in residency activity was made possible with Hawthorne PAC monies.

MSU education students will be helping with keyboarding and literature activities this second semester. This is a partnership with MSU, United Way KidsLink, and Bozeman Public Schools.

Please make sure that your child and his/her teacher know the family plan for after school care. Changing plans at the dismissal bell is confusing for HAWKS staff and the office.  Children are discouraged from using the phone unless there is a special reason. Please make these adjustments the day before and notify the Hawthorne office, classroom teacher or HAWKS if there is a change. This is for your child’s safety.
